Active High Atlas Adventure

Leave the bustling city of Marrakech behind and breathe the crisp mountain air. Designed for active travelers and adventure seekers, our Jebel Toubkal trek takes you deep into the heart of the High Atlas range to conquer North Africa's highest peak.

Why Climb Mount Toubkal with RoamMorocco?

Mount Toubkal (often spelled Mt Toubkal or Mont Toubkal) stands as a majestic sentinel over the Moroccan landscape. Climbing Toubkal is a bucket-list achievement for hikers worldwide, offering panoramic views that stretch all the way to the Sahara on a clear day.

While climbing Mount Toubkal without a guide used to be an option, local regulations and safety standards now strongly encourage (and often require) a certified local guide. Our private tours ensure you are led by experienced, English-speaking Berber mountaineers who know the Toubkal mountain like the back of their hand.

Tour Highlights

  • Summit Jebel Toubkal: Stand at the roof of North Africa.
  • Authentic Berber Culture: Trek through Imlil and share mint tea with local families.
  • Toubkal Refuge: Spend a cozy night at the famous basecamp before the summit push.
  • Private & Flexible: Pace the Toubkal hike according to your own fitness level.

How High is Mount Toubkal? (Altitude & Specs)

One of the most common questions we get is: How high is Toubkal? The Mount Toubkal height is exactly 4,167 meters (13,671 feet) above sea level. While it is a towering peak, the ascent is primarily a non-technical hike rather than a sheer rock climb, making it highly accessible to fit hikers. However, the altitude of Mont Toubkal means that acclimatization is key, which is why our 3-day itinerary is paced to prevent altitude sickness.

3-Day Jebel Toubkal Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil & The Trek to Toubkal Refuge

We pick you up from your Marrakech riad and drive into the Atlas Mountains to the village of Imlil (1,740m). Here, you meet your muleteer crew who will carry your main luggage. You'll begin your Toubkal trek ascending through the Mizane Valley, passing the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. By late afternoon, we reach the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) where we enjoy a hot Moroccan dinner and rest for the night.

Day 2: The Mount Toubkal Summit Push

We wake up before dawn for an alpine start. Headlamps on, we navigate the steep zig-zag path up the scree slopes. The Mount Toubkal difficulty peaks here, requiring stamina and mental grit. As the sun rises over the Sahara, you will reach the summit at 4,167m. Celebrate, take photos of the staggering Atlas Mountains Toubkal panoramas, and then carefully descend back to the refuge for a second night of celebration and rest.

Day 3: Descent to Imlil & Return to Marrakech

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed, scenic descent back to Imlil. With the hard work behind you, you can fully appreciate the lush walnut groves and Berber villages. After a celebratory lunch in Imlil, your private transfer will whisk you back to your hotel in Marrakech by late afternoon.

Mount Toubkal Difficulty: Is It Hard?

The Mount Toubkal difficulty is generally rated as moderate to challenging. In the summer months, it is a demanding uphill trek that requires no technical climbing gear (no ropes or harnesses). If you are reasonably fit and hike regularly, you can complete the Mount Toubkal hike. The biggest challenge for most is the altitude. Walking slowly and staying hydrated are the best strategies.

The Best Time to Climb Mount Toubkal

When planning your morocco mount toubkal trek, timing is everything.

  • Spring (April to May): This is arguably the best time to climb mount toubkal. The weather is warming up, the valleys are lush and green, and the snow on the upper peaks begins to melt, making for spectacular photos. Climbing Mount Toubkal in April is incredibly popular.
  • Autumn (September to November): Crisp, clear air makes autumn ideal. Climbing Mount Toubkal in October or November guarantees excellent visibility and mild hiking temperatures before the deep winter snow arrives.
  • Winter (December to March): Climbing Mount Toubkal winter expeditions are only for the adventurous! If you are climbing Mount Toubkal in December, January, or February, the mountain transforms into an alpine wonderland. Crampons and ice axes are absolutely mandatory (which we provide). The Toubkal winter itinerary is tough but immensely rewarding.
  • Summer (June to August): The valleys are incredibly hot, but the high altitude mont Toubkal provides a cool escape. Early morning starts are essential to beat the midday sun.

Essential Packing List for Climbing Toubkal

Whether you are trekking Toubkal in spring or tackling a winter ascent, proper gear is crucial:

  • Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support.
  • A warm sleeping bag (the Toubkal refuge provides blankets, but a sleeping bag is highly recommended).
  • Thermal base layers and a high-quality down jacket (temperatures at the 4,167m summit drop below freezing even in summer).
  • A 30L daypack (your main luggage goes on the mules).
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for the 4:00 AM summit push.
  • Sun protection: high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
