8–12 DAY PRIVATE HERITAGE EXPEDITION // 100% SHABBAT-FRIENDLY

Moroccan Jewish Heritage & Mellahs Tour

📍 ROUTE: CASABLANCA · FES · MARRAKECH · ESSAOUIRA ⏱ DURATION: 8, 10 OR 12 DAYS 🕊 100% SHABBAT-OBSERVANT LOGISTICS 🛡 DEDICATED LICENSED CHAUFFEUR & 4X4
Historic Moroccan Synagogue and Mellah Architecture in Fes

For more than two thousand years—from before the destruction of the Second Temple through the 1492 expulsion from Spain—Morocco was home to the largest Jewish community in the Islamic world. At its peak, over 300,000 Moroccan Jews lived in urban Mellahs, Atlas mountain villages, and desert trading outposts.

Today, Morocco remains the only Arab country with a constitution explicitly celebrating its Hebraic tributary, protected Jewish cemeteries, active synagogues, and state-subsidized restorations of historic Mellahs. Our private heritage tours are curated for diaspora families, roots researchers, and travelers who want deep historic immersion without rigid group bus schedules.

Core Pillars of Our Jewish Heritage Circuits

  • ✦
Hereditary Keyholder Access: Many locked synagogues and historic cemeteries rely on multi-generational Muslim and Jewish caretakers. Your chauffeur liaises ahead with local guardians in Fes, Sefrou, and Essaouira so gates are open upon arrival.
  • ✦
Strict Shabbat Compliance: On Friday afternoon, we ensure you arrive at your riad or hotel well before sundown. The vehicle is parked throughout Shabbat, and accommodations are situated within comfortable walking distance of active synagogues.
  • ✦
Kosher Provisions & Dining Guidance: Our vehicles feature a chilled cooler box for fresh foods. In Casablanca and Marrakech, your driver assists with pickups from certified kosher kitchens (Chabad Casablanca, Cercle de l'Union, Kosher Club Marrakech).
  • ✦
Roots & Ancestral Research: Have family roots in Meknes, Debdou, Demnate, or Ouezzane? We adjust itineraries to locate ancestral family residences, communal archives, and ancestral cemetery plots.

Transparent Flat Vehicle Pricing (Clients Book Own Hotels)

Unlike group tour operators who mark up hotel rooms by 40%, we operate on a transparent flat vehicle rate. You choose and book your preferred riads or luxury hotels directly, while our all-inclusive vehicle fee covers your entire transportation infrastructure: dedicated licensed chauffeur, 2024 luxury vehicle, all fuel, highway tolls, chauffeur lodging & meals, and airport transfers.

10-Day Grand Heritage Itinerary (Day-by-Day)

DAY 01 // CASABLANCA

Casablanca Arrival, Museum of Moroccan Judaism & Temple Beth-El

Your private chauffeur meets you at Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (CMN) with a personalized greeting inside arrivals. Begin your immersion in the upscale residential Oasis neighborhood at the Museum of Moroccan Judaism—the only dedicated Jewish museum in the Arab world. Curated with historic Torah scrolls, traditional Moroccan bridal caftans embroidered in gold thread, silver Hanukkiot, and restored bimahs from rural Atlas Mellahs. Later, visit the grand Temple Beth-El, the vibrant spiritual heart of Casablanca's active 2,500-member community. Check into your hotel with dinner recommendations at certified kosher establishments.

Field Note // Museum of Moroccan Judaism

“Standing in the courtyard in Oasis with a Jewish curator and a Muslim guardian discussing the restoration of an 18th-century Torah scroll from Taroudant is the moment travelers realize Morocco’s Jewish heritage isn’t an artifact of the past—it’s an living chapter of Moroccan national identity.”

— Hamza, Roam Morocco Co-Founder

DAY 02 // CASABLANCA → RABAT → SALÉ

Imperial Capital Rabat & Shrine of Rabbi Raphael Encaoua in Salé

Depart north along the modern Atlantic coastal highway to Rabat. Visit the historic Mellah of Rabat, established in 1808 by Sultan Moulay Slimane, and stroll along Rue David Cohen with its distinctive Andalusian-style wrought iron balconies. Cross the Bouregreg River to Salé to pay respects at the venerated mausoleum of Rabbi Raphael Encaoua (the "Malach Raphael"), the revered Chief Rabbi of Morocco and President of the High Rabbinical Court. Continue to the Roman-Islamic ruins of Chellah before relaxing at your hotel.

DAY 03 // RABAT → VOLUBILIS → MEKNES → FES

Roman Volubilis Hebrew Inscriptions & The Two Mellahs of Meknes

Drive east into the fertile Saïss plain. Stop at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Volubilis (Walili), where 3rd-century bronze menorahs and gravestones inscribed in Hebrew and Greek prove Jewish presence in Morocco predates the Arab conquest by centuries. Continue to Meknes, the 17th-century Ismaili imperial capital, home to both the Old Mellah (near Bab Mansour) and the New Mellah, alongside the historic Jewish cemetery where Rabbi David Benmidan rests. Arrive in Fes by evening.

DAY 04 // FES EL-BALI

The Cradle of Moroccan Jewry: Fes Mellah, Ibn Danan & Lalla Solica

Fes is the spiritual crown of Moroccan Jewish history. Established in 1438 adjacent to the Royal Palace, the Fes Mellah is the oldest in Morocco. Accompanied by a licensed heritage guide, enter the painstakingly restored 17th-century Ibn Danan Synagogue, descending to its ancient underground mikveh. Walk through the whitewashed Jewish Cemetery of Fes, honoring the tomb of Sol Hachuel (Lalla Solica), the 17-year-old Jewish martyr revered by both Jews and Muslims for her steadfast faith. Visit the former stone home of philosopher Moses Maimonides near the Bou Inania water clock.

Field Note // Fes Mellah Guardians

“At Ibn Danan, the heavy wooden door is locked from the inside. When Abdelhakim taps the brass knocker three times, Haj Mohammed, whose father watched over the synagogue before him, draws the bolt with a smile: 'Marhaban bikum, welcome to your home.' The scent of aged cedar and olive oil lamps hasn't changed since 1686.”

— Abdelhakim, Roam Morocco Operations Lead

DAY 05 // FES → SEFROU → MIDDLE ATLAS

Sefrou ("Little Jerusalem") & Middle Atlas Cedar Forests

Drive 30 minutes south to Sefrou, historically nicknamed "Little Jerusalem." In the 19th century, Jewish residents constituted nearly half of Sefrou's total population, living in seamless communal harmony with the local Amazigh (Berber) tribes as master weavers, silversmiths, and caravan traders. Explore the compact walled Mellah, the Jewish cemetery on the cliffside, and the nearby cave shrine of Kaf el-Mounmen. Continue into the scenic Middle Atlas cedar forests of Ifrane and Azrou, relaxing for the evening in mountain tranquility.

DAY 06 // MIDDLE ATLAS → MARRAKECH

Scenic Atlas Foothills Drive & Early Friday Arrival in Marrakech

Travel across the rolling plains of the Beni Mellal agricultural basin toward Marrakech. Your chauffeur times the drive so you arrive at your luxury riad in Marrakech by early afternoon (well before Friday sunset), allowing ample unhurried time to unpack, prepare, and walk to Slat Al Azama Synagogue or your chosen Shabbat service before candle-lighting.

DAY 07 // MARRAKECH

Shabbat Rest & Reflection (Zero Driving // Peaceful Day in the Medina)

A peaceful day of rest and spiritual observance. The private vehicle is parked for the entire duration of Shabbat. Enjoy the tranquil courtyards and private pools of your riad, participate in morning and afternoon services at Slat Al Azama, or take quiet unguided walks through the pedestrian-only alleys of the historic medina. Havdalah marks the conclusion of Shabbat on Saturday evening.

DAY 08 // MARRAKECH

Marrakech Mellah, 500-Year-Old Slat Al Azama & Miara Cemetery

Spend the day exploring Marrakech's rich Jewish history. Established in 1558 by the Saadian Sultan Moulay Abdallah, the Marrakech Mellah (officially Hay Essalam) was a center of jewelry crafting, spices, and trade. Tour the 500-year-old Slat Al Azama (Synagogue of the Expelled), founded by Megorashim exiles from Toledo in 1492. Visit the vast Miara Jewish Cemetery, the largest Jewish burial ground in Morocco, with over 20,000 graves spanning half a millennium, including prominent Tzadikim (saints) such as Rabbi Hanania Cohen and Rabbi Pinhas Cohen.

DAY 09 // MARRAKECH → ESSAOUIRA (MOGADOR) → MARRAKECH

Coastal Essaouira: Rabbi Chaim Pinto Synagogue, Slat Lkahal & Ramparts

Take a scenic morning drive across the Argan plains to the breezy Atlantic coast of Essaouira (ancient Mogador). Under Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah in the 18th century, Jewish merchants known as Toujjar al-Sultan (King's Merchants) formed the majority of the city's population, controlling sea trade with Europe. Visit the restored Rabbi Chaim Pinto Synagogue and Mausoleum, where thousands gather each September for the annual Hiloula. Explore Slat Lkahal (Synagogue of the Poor) and walk the ocean ramparts where the Atlantic breezes carry the scent of sea salt and cedar thuya wood. Return to Marrakech in the evening.

DAY 10 // MARRAKECH OR CASABLANCA

Departure Transfer to Marrakech (RAK) or Casablanca (CMN)

Enjoy breakfast in your riad garden. Your private chauffeur provides seamless private airport transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) or chauffeurs you comfortably north to Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (CMN) in time for your return transatlantic or European flight.
